Dan Dare Pilot of the Future

Above is the front cover of  The Eagle from 9th July 1983.
This is one of the early issues of the 1980's re-launch of the famous 1960's comic. This cover story is of Dan Dare Pilot of the Future.
The New Launch brought back Dan Dare glossing over the stories that had appeared in the 2000AD of the late 1970's this Dare was not a genetically frozen original but the great great great Grandson of the 1960's original.

I love the art in these early 1980's Dan Dare stories the colour's and amazing space ships just drew me in all day long when is was a kid.

Charley's War

Continuing the scans from great comics of the past today we have an episode of Charley's War Taken from The Eagle and Wildcat 27/05/1989.
The story would have originally been printed in the Battle Picture Weekly in the early 1980's.
for those of you not familiar with the story Charley Bourne is a Solider in the British army during the first world war and we follow his adventures from just before the battle of the Somme right up till just after the evacuation of Dunkirk in the second world war.
Written by Pat Mills with great black and white art by Joe Colquhoun the story was very detailed and very well researched with Charley being involved in some key events of the first and second world war.
The story was more an anti war story concentrating more on the grim day to day life in the trenches then the heroic deeds or glory of battle like many other war stories of the time.
The episode below takes place just before the third battle of Ypres in late 1917 and sees Charley and pals team up with the clay kickers tunneling under no mans land in one of the 21 tunnels that would be blown up before the start of the main offensive.
Have a read and tell me what you think especially if you are new to Charley's War.
